Jim Hamill…gone, but never forgotten

Another longtime gospel music legend has passed away.

It is all over the web that Hall of Fame singer Jim Hamill died this morning after battling illness for some time.

I don't intend this to be a lengthy ode to Hamill, for there are already several more appropriate tributes to be found elsewhere in the blogosphere, and no doubt soon in print media as well. Like most of you, I found out by just surfing here on the web over breakfast, and haven't had time to gather all my thoughts together to eulogize him.

And who says I can in an appropriate manner anyway? Like most of you, I never had any personal contact with Jim in my life...all I know about him is what mutual friends have told me, and what I can glean from the many recordings he made(many of them classic), and what books and articles have related about him.

One thing from those recordings that is obvious to anyone who listens is that he was one great master of ceremonies.

All I'll say for now at this time is that if you're a fan of gospel music, you might just pause for a moment, and remember fondly the numerous contributions that Jim Hamill made to this genre of music...and to many of the people who have sung or are continuing to sing in it.

To paraphrase Big Jim, "I liked his kind of singin'!"

I only had a couple of oppotunities to be on the same venue as Big Jim Hamill, but I was always impressed with his sincerity toward others in Gospel Music. He will be missed.

I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to meet him, just long enough to get him to autograph his CDs for me at the NQC 2006.

I am so thankful for the privilege!!

All though I did not see Jim sing with the Kingsmen, I am thankful to have seen him on the stage singing with Ed Oneil and friends at NQC 2005!

The Kingsmen are my absolute favorites and they have been such a blessing and encouragement to me!! They hold a very special place in my heart.

It still amazes me that God has made it possible for me to have the privilege and the blessing to be part of this wonderful Southern Gospel extended family!!

Something I could have never imagined!! Praise God!!

Thanks Jim and I'll be seeing you, again someday!!

Elaine Harcourt's avatar Over the years I was blessed to see many many times with The Kingsmen & he knew how to work a crowd better than anyone else except maybe George Younce. When he went off the road I missed that spark at The Kingsmen concerts. I always hoped to see him one more time & I will but not on this side of the river.

God is good all the time & all the time God is good.

Big Jim was my favorite Kingsman of all time. When he left, the Kingsmen were not the same. Whenever you saw the Kingsmen when he was there, you never wanted to take your eyes off him because you might miss something.

Jim Hamill was the first hero I remember having as a child. My first Southern Gospel concert featured The Kingsmen at a small church in Kokomo, IN. As a four-year-old I was enthralled by Jim's boisterous emcee work, especially his penchant for picking on little Ernie Phillips. I can still remember much of that concert. We've lost a great man. I have a feeling he's having a time up in Heaven.
