The Hoppers - Hymns

Producer: Lari Goss
Label: Spring Hill Records
Website: http://www.thehoppers.com

The problem with a lot of Hymn albums is that they are boring; filled with flat, unimaginative arrangements and quite honestly I was prepared for that to be the case with this project as I set down to give it a listen. When it comes to harmony, few do it as well as The Hoppers and this CD is a prime example of just that. As with any Hopper project this CD is heavily orchestrated; however also true of The Hopper’s music, the message is strong and in the forefront of the instruments and arrangements.

The CD kicks off with an acapella version of the Negro spiritual Down by the River Side. We’re not talking just straight harmony, not The Hoppers; no this cut has intricate harmonies, key changes and tons of style. Impeccable in my opinion; I like acapella if it’s good and this is good. Another acapella track, The Solid Rock, is just good tight harmony and a pleasure to listen to. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing has a nice bluesy style to it, a very nice touch for a song that can fall in to that boring category if care is not taken when singing it. There’s not a bad song on the CD, some are better than others, but they’re all just good Hopper style.

The CD finishes strong with a beautiful musical score for a medley of Just As I am and Coming Home. Great choice of songs for this CD, my favorites, Down by the River Side, Oh Come Angel Band, The Love of God (which is my favorite hymn anyway, I love the lyrics) and Going Home. This CD has a great mix of acapella performances, beautiful orchestrations, and light accompaniment and is an excellent choice if you’re a Hopper fan or if you love the old hymns. I would also highly recommend this CD if you happen to be one of those that don’t (gasp) like Southern Gospel music you won’t be disappointed.
