New staff writer Jon Leighton Groves speaks with Scott Fowler about the ever-popular Legacy Five.
-----------------------------------------
“God gives you a passion for what he is going to have you do with your life.”
While there are those in the music industry who’s hobby is to perform, the existence of Legacy Five can be traced back to a single word: passion. Their drive to minister an extravagant love for God is completely apparent in every song and on every stage across America. Truly, the Legacy they are leaving is one of great merit.
For years, a group called The Cathedrals championed the message of Christ through song and word around the country. Their songs were wells of good news that people continue to draw from today. Their passion for God permeated their lives on and off the stage. In 1999, after 39 years of ministry, when George Younce and Glen Payne felt it was time to lay down the torch, Roger Bennett and Scott Fowler felt the call of God to pick it up and continue a Legacy that will last generations.
The group is appropriately named Legacy Five because they bring an old, unchanging message to an ever-changing world. Music has always been targeted at a specific age range. Concerts are very intentional in who they promote to and attract. This is a barrier that Legacy Five has overcome.
Scott Fowler says, “I know this isn’t considered the ‘cool’ music, and it probably never will be. But, when it’s done well, people from all ages enjoy it and eventually learn to like it like I did growing up.”
L5 receives a great response from every generation, which is evident in the large age variety present at each venue. It is their goal that every member of the audience will leave saying, “The good music and connection from the singers helped me realize what a great Savior I have. I was encouraged to again be faithful to the cause of Christ. Jesus is right for everything that is wrong in my life.”
From the industry eye, L5 has been an extremely successful and influential group. Their heritage was a major springboard into their becoming a household name. Their songs touch hearts and entertain the listener because they never select a song they are not passionate about.
When asked to define success, Scott said, “Success to me is being obedient to what God has called me to do, and just staying faithful.”
They encourage those who have this similar calling not to despise small beginnings, but rather, bloom where they are planted.
Legacy Five is a group of men that love God, love their families, and love each other. They each spend their time off the road to be husbands to their wives and dads to their kids. They try as often as possible to let their kids climb on the bus and “see what dad does.” On the bus, it is not uncommon to find Scott Howard playing pranks like hiding an armadillo in the bathroom, or racing bullfrogs up and down the aisle. With this group, what you see is what you get. They minister with excellence because they have a passion for Christ.
“God gives you a passion for what he is going to have you do with your life.”
