CrossWay – Beautiful Thing

Producer: David Ponder
Label: Big Ten House of Music
Website: http://crosswaynet.com

The release of Beautiful Thing from CrossWay was one of the most anticipated releases in Southern Gospel for a multitude of reasons. First – fans wanted to know what the group would sound like on recording with new tenor Scott Rogers, as well as where their new management company, Big Ten Entertainment, would be taking them. Before the release of the album, CrossWay lost another one of its founding members, Chris Weaver, and the group had to delay the release of the recording yet again.

The time has now come for the world to hear the newest release from CrossWay, Beautiful Thing. Now officially a trio, the group had to refine their sound a bit. The album opens up with the pop-country sounding “70 X 7” which was written by frontman Matt McFarland. “On My Way to Heaven” follows next and features a strong vocal performance from Scott Rogers with a definitive country slant.

For the most part, Beautiful Thing takes off where CrossWay’s last recording (This I Know) left off. The group is a tad bit more progressive country sounding – more like a cross between Gaither Vocal Band and Rascal Flatts. This is most notably heard in tunes like the first radio single “Wherever You Are”, “Beautiful Thing”, and “Surrending.”

“Took It All Away” features a very strong vocal performance from Scott Rogers with special guest Annie McRae and is easily the strongest cut on the disc. The emotion displayed in Scott’s voice, and Annie’s response and play on his performance makes for an amazing moment.

Even traditional fans will find a lot to love on Beautiful Thing, such as the old-school sound of “Hallelujah Side” and the melodically strong “When I Hear the Thunder.”

Lyrically – the group found even better songs than last time. Again – the strongest cut is Annie McRae’s “Took It All Away” which speaks of finding hope in Christ alone even if he “took it all away”. However, Matt McFarland has turned in some great songs as well, such as “70 X 7” and “Greatest Love”. The group seems to tackle the topic of finding security and who they are in Jesus only – most specifically on songs like “That’s All”, “Beautiful Thing”, and “Thank God I’m Not Jesus.”

The group has truly been moved by the lyrics behind “Thank God I’m Not Jesus”. I have mixed feelings about the song as a whole. I think it tackles a heavy subject, but I’m not sure it’s the most solid song on the album. There are some major melody issues as well as a lack of a memorable hook. However, I know that the song is touching the group and means a lot to them – however to me, it is the only misstep on an album chock full of hit songs.

In the end, the album may not have a multitude of songs that speak about the blood, the cross, or heaven, but it does feature a lot of songs about finding hope and who we are through the love of Jesus thanks to songwriting talent from the likes of Tony Wood, Jim Brady, Barry Weeks, David Ponder, Gordon Mote, Annie McRae, Mark Harris, and many more.

Thanks to the production work of David Ponder and the group’s current management team, CrossWay created another fantastic recording that fans of good music will love.

I think this is by far the best album by Crossway. I don't quite agree with you on "Thank God I'm Not Jesus." That song is awesome! If you listen very carefully to the lyrics, that song cuts right to the bone of our human nature versus the divinity and grace of a loving Savior. It's definately not a conventional song in the realm of SG, but I think it may be one of the strongest cuts on the album in terms of appealing to a broader audience. Just my $.02's worth.

CrossWay Fan's avatar I am in total agreement with Joe. This project has some of the most powerful material on it I have ever heard. "Thank God I'm Not Jesus" is the favorite of most of the young people I know. Personally, "When I Hear the Thunder" and "On My Way to Heaven" are the two I can most relate to.
"Took It All Away" is awesome and when Scott performs it live there is seldom a dry eye in the house. AWESOME! $.02 more:)

Chris D. Unthank's avatar It's not that I didn't like the concept of "Thank God I'm Not Jesus". I applaud CrossWay for taking the risk and recording the song. However, I just feel like the song was poorly written, and the melody is especially hard to get into. I feel like they could have found a song that conveyed the same message yet was written better.

pittsgirl's avatar I am a fan of anything CrossWay does, so it goes without saying that I love the new c.d. "Thank God I'm not Jesus" wasn't on my pre-release and it has taken me a while, but I have come to like it too. I have noticed that for some reason, the young fans really like that song. List me with the ones whose favorite is "Hallelujah Side".

natesings's avatar So was Chris Weaver's voice taken out of the final mix on the CD?

  6.    CrossWay Fan ~ 05/01/2007

CrossWay Fan's avatar Chris is not on the final cut. Glad I have a pre-release.smile He'll be missed, but I understand his reasons for going.
Back to "Thank God I'm Not Jesus"...not everyone is going to like every song, melody, or lyrical content. If they did everyone would have the same favorites.smile I love everything about the song, because it will make people do a lot of self-examination. I know it did for me.

oh was this a southern gosple cd ,.,by the looks of it i thought, they were
a retro woodstock 60's cover band
..come on guys you put out good music before home come you got to look like you want to fit in with the ungodly drug infested hippy culture ,,what does it do for your ministry?

Guys just keep doing what you are doing and don't listen to those who can't see past a clothesline. I probably could make a judgment against this Metcalf guy based on what he wears too.

  11.    .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) ~ 05/22/2007

Don't judge a book by it's cover!! Judge not lest ye be judged!! There is not a single thing about the cover that looks hippie???!!! The pic has the guys on the front and a single flower that represents the song "BEAUTIFUL THING"!! It does not look like the hippie flowers from the 60's or 70's it is a real flower. If u saw them in person or listen to them u could get pass the cover and realize they are about the Lord!! There is nothing worldly about these guys!! I have been to their concerts and met them and God is so strong that you can not help but be blessed!! I have been to More Famous concerts and it was so put on that there was no way God had any room to move!! So, I think that a pic on a cd cover is the least of my concerns!! I am sure people had a problem with what John The Baptist wore to!! If they are doing what they r suppose to for the Lord who cares if they have on a 3 piece suit, camel hair,a robe or a pair of jeans?!

  12.    CrossWay Fan ~ 05/22/2007

    CrossWay Fan's avatar Amen, Jim!
Glad people with that opinion never met John the Baptist...Woah!

Keep it up Crossway..knew and loved you in 3piece suits...still love ya now!

TOOK IT ALL AWAY - My favorite song on here. Love the vocals on all the album and all the songs have their own message and they are all about hope. They all have their own FRESH voice telling their own FRESH message in complete ORIGINALITY! ABSOLUTE NUMBER 1 CD!

I think they new Cd is just awesome !
I would love Crossway regardless of what they were wearing, and To answer your question James,

"come on guys you put out good music before home come you got to look like you want to fit in with the ungodly drug infested hippy culture ,,what does it do for your ministry?

Music fills the courts of heaven as heavenly beings praise our Lord and Creator. When God created the world, the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy (Job 38:7). God created man in His own image, to be a instrument of praise. He gave humans the ability to sing and to make music with musical instruments to complement the voice.

Music was an important part of the worship service at the temple. Certain groups of the Levitical tribes were designated as temple musicians and singers, offering their praises to God. David had a real gift of music, providing soothing harp music to King Saul when the king was distraught. David also commissioned most of the instruments and songs for the temple services. He also wrote most of the songs in Psalms, the longest book in the Bible.

Songs and poetry were also means to improve the memory, to help remember significant events or warnings. The Song of Moses is a good example of this.

From the introduction of the harp and flute early in Genesis to the song of the redeemed in God's heavenly city, music fills the Holy Scriptures. A number of songs are included in their entirety in this compilation. My prayer is that your heart will be filled with music as you study what the Bible has to say about music, songs and musical instruments............

I havent seen anywhere that states you must be dressed in certain attire to worship God....

hangs head as i exit....thinking .... we cant reach the lost, when we are more concerned with what they have on them , than we are with what is in them...... so make this .03 cents worth
