Blessed Are The Caring For They Shall Be Cared For

In previous articles, I referred to The Beatitudes of Christ as “The Spiritual and Psycho-Social Profile of God’s Ultimate Overcomers.” As we focus our attention on these Beatitudes given in Matthew 5:1-12, we will gain an enormous appreciation for the comfort and hope they can instill. They not only cite the problems and perplexities that are common to most of us, but they offer a hope and promise that we will eventually get through what we are presently going through.

Our fifth installment is, “Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy” (v.7). I have paraphrased it, “Blessed Are the Caring for They Shall Be Cared For.” Here Christ would introduce a simple analogy between doing unto others as you would have others do unto you. This is certainly a parallel axiom to the oft-quoted Golden Rule of the Bible.

Christ’s statement seems in stark contrast to what we see in today’s society. There is a prevailing shift toward narcissism or an inordinate obsession with self-love. This has been referred to as “The Age of ME.” It seems most people are only interested in themselves, and have little regard or concern for others. It isn’t just the children who manifest a spoiled, self-centered, ego-driven behavior. It seems that in the “rat race of life,” it is the “rats” who always win. Their philosophy is expressed with the mantra, “Me getting mine is more important than you getting yours.” This ideology is not what makes a society great.

Our Beatitude reminds us that if we will put others first, be considerate, compassionate, and caring to others, those same gestures of kindness will be reciprocated to us when we are in need. It may not be from the same person you assisted, but Christ promises that your kindness will come back to you. He said that when we care for others and are merciful to them, we will be the recipients of care and mercy when we are in need.

We are informed that sowing seeds of kindness will result in a harvest of what we have sown. Today is a great day to show your love and care for a friend or family member who is suffering from the sorrows of life. You can make a difference if you will show them that they are not alone. One day, you may need someone to do the same for you. If you sowed the seed of kindness, you will surely reap a rich harvest of care and compassion.

You are welcome to join me each Thursday morning as we discuss these amazing insights from the Master Psychologist. If you need personal counseling, I am available for you. Please contact Heather Hurd in Social Services to schedule an appointment.

There are great insights to be derived from the study of the Greek or Hebrew Testaments. Each month I will endeavor to share a nugget of truth from the Book of Truth, God’s Eternal Word. These will be concise and should not intrude into your time or opportunity to explore the richness of the vein from which they were extracted. That is for you and the Holy Spirit to excavate together. These nuggets are just to let you know where to begin the digging, if you so desire. They are NOT designed to be an exhaustive commentary providing all the answers on the subject. The Spirit will guide you in how.
