Steve Warren- Come to Jesus

Producer: Russell Sims and Frank Green
Label: Sims Records

Country Gospel is the theme of this review. Steve Warren has a big Country voice complete with vocal runs reminiscent of George Jones.

The project gets started with a mid tempo, Country Gospel ballad, “Those Three Old Rusty Nails”. This one is country as corn bread and a good song to kick off the album. Steve shows the bigness of his voice on the ballad “Scars Upon His Heart”.

“Sending Down the Latter Rain” keeps the tempo down and is a nice ballad. Steve’s voice has an edge to it in his lower range and is much more pleasant after the key change when he is singing in his mid range. “I Believe I’ll Be Here When Jesus Comes” is another mid tempo Country ballad. His style on this one reminds me a little of Country Music star Freddie Hart, especially in the beginning of the verses. Once again his lower register is a little weak but his upper register is quite pleasant.

“Waiting By The River” slows the tempo down again. This song showcases his voice much better as it keeps the melody in his mid and upper range. “Fired Up and Filled Up” finally picks the tempo and is a driving, Pentecostal style song and is one of the best cuts on the project. This is the type of song that fits him well.

“Hallelujah Meeting” is another hand clapper and is one of the best vocal performances on the project. “Soul Winner” reminds me of some of the Country Pop songs of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Steve sings this song very well.

“The Cross Brought You Through” has that Hinson feel to it complete with all the Country vocal moves. Steve closes the project out with “By the Cross”, a Country ballad with an emotional story.

Steve Warren has put together a nice collection of material. When he pitches the songs higher, his voice smoothes out and he sings very well. I think that sometimes, the vocal runs seem forced, trying to accomplish a certain style. His lower tones are rough and not as pleasing to the ear. I would have liked to have heard at least one more up tempo songs but for the most part, the project was enjoyable.

Scars Upon His Heart
Sending Down the Latter Rain
I Believe I’ll Be Here When Jesus Comes
Waiting By the River

I agree with with the first comment posted. This is truly a great CD. I personally feel that all the engineering and production is a top notch product. The vocals on this project as well as all of his others contains his own very unique style. To me that is what seperates him from the rest of the "assembly line" style groups and soloists today. At least I have not heard any "stacked vocals" with any of his projects. They all are done old school, and that is what compels me to listen. The choice of songs are great because of the message in each song. You know, for someone that pastor's a church fulltime, and also puts about 100,000 miles out on the road preaching revivals and singing, plus finding time to record for his label, is entitled to a not so good day once in a while...amen? Steve is truly a great man of God, and until you personally experience a live service with him, you don't know what you are missing.

cool smile
